I got there by a post on I Can Haz Cheez Burger which contained a link to a video of the opening credits to "The Greatest American Hero" which I used to watch on Saturdays. Ah to be young and bill free.

http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Blog/archives/50-Google-Chrome.html
Ok so Google has released their own web browser that uses Apples rendering engine and promises some serious code. I wont give you the sales pitch as you can find that anywhere. Anyway so i downloaded it to test and boy does it fly. Web pages load really fast. But then they do on my Firefox 3 once I tweaked the settings a little. I'm assuming Google has set Chrome to use the maximum allowed number of connections to a server and not wait for the page to finish loading until it starys displaying. Thing is you can do this in Firefox but Firefox keep things slower as some users are on slower machines and connections.

I know Chrome is in beta but it has no RSS support at present and very few options. It's bookmarking system sucks and in my opinion it's ugly. Also it's fully skinned and always looks like a Vista window, even on XP.

BUT .. none of that compares to the fact that the licence you agree to when installing it says that you give all rights for anything you upload share etc to Google.

QUOTE:

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Blog/archives/49-Javascript-To-Change-Image-On-Link-Click.html
I recently decided to add the ability for guests to request a new captcha image (or refresh the captcha image) in my guestbook script for when it was to hard for visitors to read. As usual trying to find some instructions to do this proved useless so I had to figure it out myself. I thought I would explain how it's done here for anyone else wanting to do this and believe me it's very very simple.

Ok first thing we need to do is give a name to the image we are going to by replacing/changing so we add a name. For the guestbook script I added added name="lazCaptcha" to the image tag.

eg:

CODE:

Next we need to create the link that the viewer clicks on to replace/change the image and for that I used this bit of code:

CODE:

request another image

Notice how I put the name of the image into the Javascript? Thats so we can use this code multiple times on a single page.

Next we need the Javascript and it is very simple. We just create a random number to add to the image url to prevent it showing the cached image and then tell the browser to change the image. I'll show two examples. The first is just when we want to display a random image and the second is how I display a new captcha image with the same code.
http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Blog/archives/48-Microsoft-Vista-Haters.html
I just read this news story.

Microsoft is trying to improve the image of Vista (I personally have no problems with it) and they decided to get a load of XP users together who had all said they didn't like Vista. They filmed them giving their opinions on Vista and then let them try a new operating system codenamed Mojave. More than 90% of them gave positive feedback on Mojave.

Then Microsoft told them that Mojave is actually just Vista.

Remember that life is full of new experiences and you have to give things a chance before you can honestly say you don't like them. Be it food, people or even operating systems.

http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Blog/archives/47-Virus-Email.html
Apparently there is a virus email going around which claims to be from UPS. It contains a zip file which contains an executable (.exe) claiming to be an invoice. I'm sorry but I feel you have to be a bit stupid to open any attachment from someone you don't know let alone run a file which claims to be an invoice but is in fact a program. Also haven't these people heard of anti virus software? I personally run Anti Vir which is free and one of the better anti virus programs out there.

Apparently in 2003 Bill Gates sent an internal email complaining that the userability of Windows was actually going backwards. He comments that it took to many steps to install Windows Movie Maker. OK so after failing to get my host to remove my fake login page RSA decided to try and bully me into removing it. I refuse but to save hassle I have redesigned the page as can be seen here. And here is the content of their email to me:
I have just read the news that two spammers who had been abusing MySpace to send out spam messages for various things from selling ringtones to porn sites failed to turn up in court and were fined $234,000,000 (about £119.5 million) in their absence! Read full story.

http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Blog/archives/42-Site-Down.html
If anyone actually visited this site this morning you would of seen a notice saying my account had been suspended. This was because I made a script to demonstrate how realistic fake login pages can look and how easy they are to make. You can see the page in question here (page design changed. See more recent entry). As you can see it even says it's a fake login at the bottom. All the script does is display the details you have submitted. I suppose I should add a few more hints that it's a fake login. Thankfully I had informed a member of staff at my hosts about the script when I made it and he helped sort the mess out.

http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Blog/archives/41-Run-Linux-and-Windows-On-Same-Machine.html
Ok for some installing Linux along side Windows and dual booting between them is easy to do. For most of us it's something we have never done before and so is beyond us. Anyway along comes Wubi that does all the hard work for you. Wubi is a downloader and installer for Ubuntu.

Basically you download Wubi and run it. Wui creates a virtual partition on the drive of your choice and you can even specify the size for the virtual partition. On running Wubi it will ask you what drive to put the virtual partition on, how much space to use for it, what language to use, which type of Ubuntu to install (Gnome, KDE, KDE 4 remix, or Xfce but I suggest Gnome for people new to Linux), and for a username and password. It then downloads the Ubuntu you have selected and installs it. Once installed you can reboot your computer and at start up you will get a screen asking if you want to boot into Windows or Ubuntu (if you do nothing it will automatically start Windows after 30 seconds). And that's it. No damage to your Windows installation, no loss of file and if you want to un-install it just boot inWindows and run Wubi again.

I've been using this for a coupe of weeks now and mostly find myself using Ubuntu. The Gnome version (which is Ubuntu, KDE version being Kubuntu and Xfce version being Xubuntu) comes with Firefox 3 (web browser), Open Office 2.4 (office suite like MS office), Evolution (Outlook like program with mail and calendar), GIMP (graphics editor), an audio/video player, loads of games, cd/dvd burner etc. It does not come with avi playback nor mp3 playback but when you go to play one of these files it will tell you it needs the codec then offer to install it.

I personally don't use the default programs and instead I have instaled Amarok for listening to music, VLC for watching films and Thunderbird for reading email. Software is easily installed by using the Synaptics package manager which lists all available software and you just tick what you want to install (or untick if you have it installed and want to remove it) and click apply. it's that easy.

Went to see Iron Man this weekend and was very impressed. Film was far better than I expected it to be. It is over two hours long but at no point does it feel like it. If you do go to see it you have to stay to see the bit after the credits. It's a doozy.
